Make the Most of Holiday Parties

Make the Most of Holiday Parties (This post originally appeared in 2011; I hope you agree that its aged well. ) December, right around the corner, is one of the busiest social seasons of the year. We probably attend more parties this month than any other. That can be a blessing and a curse if you’re in a job hunt or thinking about changing jobs next year. Here are some tips to help you survive â€" and maybe thrive. First, put in extra effort to look and feel your best. A prolonged job search takes a physical and mental toll on you, and your energy level may look very low when you mingle with upbeat partygoers. Get some extra sleep, put on a new shade of lipstick or a sweater in a flattering color and smile. Let people know that you’re optimistic about what the new year will bring, even if you’re not quite sure you are. People will be attracted to your energy and spend more time with you. And that could yield more and better advice and support. Embed from Getty Imageswindow.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'09iKTaEOR4VSOkiy4N2aFQ',sig:'Zty4XMo_4nPXAOgFZvpiP09_esHeZo_44ckxBS7TXUQ=',w:'378px',h:'252px',items:'200325940-001',caption: false ,tld:'com',is360: false })}); Next, make sure that your elevator speech is current and memorable. You’ll be meeting new people and may be reconnecting with former colleagues, so it’s a good time to revamp what you usually say. If you’ve been looking for more than a year, you don’t want people to hear that you’re still in the same place you were last year. Bring a fresh perspective; talk about what you’ve done or learned over the past twelve months. “I’ve spent some time volunteering at the Humane Society, and helped organize their annual fundraising campaign.” “I received my PHR certification, and I’m exploring options in corporate recruiting.” “I’ve changed my course slightly, and I’m looking into consulting.” Third, do no harm. Don’t overindulge. Eating the wrong foods and gaining pounds will not help your self-image when you get back into the search in earnest in a few weeks. Alcohol may not be your best friend when you’re trying to impress new contacts. Enjoy with moderation. Remember that people are feeling generous during this time of year. We take time to reflect on our blessings and we feel inclined to help others in need. Don’t be afraid to ask someone for advice or assistance with your search. As you connect with someone at a social event (and it feels like they are open to you) ask if you can connect again in the new year. “I’ve enjoyed talking with you tonight; may I call you in January to follow up?” Chances are, most people will say yes. They may even suggest that you call during the last weeks of December, when most businesses slow down and people have more time to catch up. I hope that you’ll take time to remember your blessings during the holiday season. Don’t let your income status limit your celebration of the holidays. Joy, after all, is free.

How Graduates can use Pinterest to maximise Employability

How Graduates can use Pinterest to maximise Employability Although you might not use Pinterest right now, it’s likely you’ve at least heard of it. Springing up in 2009, it has become a juggernaut of social networking, currently taking third place behind Facebook and Twitter as most used on the planet. Already there are over 20 million people using it on a daily basis. It’s a vast resource that graduates should be taking advantage of, especially if you’re in the design crowd or other form of visual media, such as photography. If the job market is proving difficult to crack, then you’re going to need all the help you can get. Here are a few ways Pinterest can aid you in your quest to land that career and increase your employability. Complete Profile As Pinterest should show the very best of you, so should your profile. It should sound as creative and amazing as possible, which will increase the chance of it getting read. Remember, your profile is a statement about you. You and your experiences. It’s all very well telling people you like to travel but this is Pinterest. Show that you like to travel. Pin images of your travelling with unique and interesting descriptions. Make people want to look at them. Create interesting boards This is pretty obvious. No one likes a boring board. But a smart thing to do if you’re interested in a particular career is to create a board that focuses on this subject. By searching for things that relate to your desired field, you can pin them to boards and create a great page that inspires you, and possibly others too. Similarly, another idea linked to this is to focus your searches on companies or people you actually are interested in working for and would like to understand more. Create boards that highlight these groups and their influence on you. Professionalism is a virtue. Your profile states you love to travel. That’s brilliant and images of the snowy Alps and the Moroccan desert will certainly impress. What won’t are images of you throwing up after a melon fishbowl cocktail in Malia. Remember, potential employers may view your boards, so be completely professional and ensure your images and designs match the appearance that you want to portray. Get engaged Of course, you are not being asked to pop the big question to a loved one. Simply put, studies have shown that pages and boards that regularly engage with their visitors are much more successful and therefore much more likely to get noticed. If comments are made about your photographs or designs, then reply back. If someone repins your pin, then follow them and thank them for their interest. By creating this community, you’re increasing the likelihood of meeting potential employers. Graduates are often going to suffer from the vicious circle of ‘No job, no experience, no experience, no job’. By utilising this social networking tool to its full potential, you can really make yourself stand out from the crowd.

How Much Should I Charge For Resume Writing As A Beginner?

How Much Should I Charge For Resume Writing As A Beginner? There are so many questions surrounding the subject of how much should I charge for resume writing as a beginner. I've tried my best to cover some of the most common questions. Please be aware, though, that I'm only as good as my sources, and they're the ones who are getting paid by the hour to do so.If you are looking to make money from your resume writing services, you don't want to start charging too little. Nobody wants to get paid for work they didn't do. If you're charging too little for your services, you might not get the results you wanted.I've seen a lot of questions regarding how much should I charge for resume writing as a beginner. How much should I charge for resume writing as a beginner depends on a number of factors. Of course, the amount you charge per hour will depend upon the skill level of the writer you hire. But there are some things that are just basic rules.First, you should provide extra information on the resume. The extra information is what makes the resume stand out from the others. In order to get extra information on the resume, you should ask for it at the beginning of the process. Once you get an answer, it's easy to tell what type of resume the client needs.Extras don't have to be professional writing. When you hire a resume writer, they will provide extras for free. In fact, it's in your best interest to offer extras for free. Why?Well, most people don't write professionally, and the extras are free information that will help their resume stand out. It's easy to know if someone knows how to write professionally. But in many cases, it's easier to know if someone knows how to write efficiently. In fact, if your client has extras on their resume that is extra information, they will be far more likely to hire you. Once you hire your first writer, you can pass along the extras along to the rest of your staff, and they will try to sell them to the clients.Hopefully these few t ips will help you answer the question, 'How much should I charge for resume writing as a beginner?' I hope they are enough to help you answer that question.

5 Tips to Become an Optimistic Boss

5 Tips to Become an Optimistic Boss If you want to become a better boss, one of the best things you can focus on is making yourself more optimistic. Managers who are optimistic are more likely to be effective leaders. When you are optimistic, your optimism has a way of rubbing off on your employees. This has a snowball effect, turning your entire company into a hotbed of optimism and innovation.evalWhen you are ready to transform your life and your business, use the following five tips to become an optimistic boss who motivates employees every day.1. Don’t Dwell on MistakesevalOne of the best things about optimists is that they do not dwell on their mistakes. Instead, they view every mistake simply as another step on the road to success. You need to use your mistakes to learn and grown, but you cannot beat yourself or your employees up about them. You should make sure every member of your staff knows that mistakes will be treated as merely fleeting setbacks. This gives them the courage to fail, which allows them to spr ead their wings and make important discoveries.2. Always Accentuate the PositiveOptimistic leaders always focus on the positive progress their teams are making no matter how incremental it is. You should start all of your meetings by celebrating your employees’ recent successes. When you make an effort to focus on the positive side of things, it breeds optimism throughout your company. When your employees know that the positive side of things will always be focused on, they will work hard to bring in results that keep the positivity going. Make sure to reward your employees’ positive results. Just as you strive to perform well at your job for compensation and benefits, your employees will strive to do well when they know that positive results receive compensation.3. Be Open to CriticismOne of the paradoxes about being optimistic is that it means you need to be able to embrace criticism. One of the differences between optimists and pessimists is the way they perceive criticism. Op timists look at criticism as a useful tool to help them learn how to improve.Pessimists get defensive and think negative feedback makes them a failure. When you are open to criticism from both your employees and your customers, you will be a tremendous boss who achieves a high level of success.4. To put things into perspective, Google receives an average of 2 resumes per minute or 20,000 resumes per week, according to The New York Times (which works out to 2 resumes per minute). So, even if your resume is in tip-top shape and you have the perfect qualifications for the job, theres a chance that your resume may never even get looked at. Thats where networking comes in. But networking can be tough, especially if you are not the social type. If the thought of calling people you dont know or having conversation at a networking event makes you a little nervous, consider the following networking tips to help you build your network. Existing Network: Good news, you already have a network (unless youve been living as a recluse on some remote island). What? you may ask. Every friend, relative, former coworker, current coworker, college or high school acquaintance is a part of your existing network. And did I mention neighbors, your mailman and the checkout person at the supermarket. All of these individuals are part of your existing network, now you just need to formalize your list. How to start: Paper Pen The best way to start is to create a list of names and the easiest way to do this is to create an old-fashioned list. Use whatever you are most comfortable with paper, computer, whatever. Just start your list. Categories First, list all of the categories mentioned above (schools, jobs, etc.) and then start to make a list of names under these categories (leave yourself room to add more as you go). Extended Network: Once youve created your list network list, its time to build your extended network. This consists of: People who work or worked at companies where you worked They may not actually know you (maybe they know your name and maybe they dont) but if you work/worked at the same company they are likely to be receptive to being part of your network. People who work or worked at companies where you would like to work As part of your job search, you should have a list of the companies where you would like to work. From this list, search for people you know that either work at these companies (or worked there at some point). These individuals will be your best source for introductions and the inside scoop on these companies. LinkedIn is a great tool for this research. How to Create an Accomplishments Document to Use in Your Negotiations for a Promotion - Hallie Crawford

How to Create an Accomplishments Document to Use in Your Negotiations for a Promotion We encourage our clients to create and periodically update an accomplishments document. An accomplishments document is an easy way for you to track any measurable results from projects, kudos from clients and managers, positive feedback from customers, or anything else that speaks towards your ability as a professional. It is especially useful if you want to show your superiors that you deserve a promotion or a raise. But how can get started, especially if you already have quite some time in your profession? First, we recommend using an Excel or Google Sheets document. Set up different sheets for different categories, such as “Projects”, “General Positive Feedback”, “Training Received”, “Measurable Results”, etc. Then, for each sheet, consider using the following columns: Date, Project, Objective/Goal, Results, My Specific Contributions, Kudos/Feedback Received. Keep in mind that the column titles will change depending on what exactly you want to track. (For an example of how you could set up an Excel file for your professional use, check out our Job Sheet Worksheet!) Once you have your spreadsheet set up, take 10-15 minutes to think about the most recent projects or positive feedback that comes to your mind. Record the information in as much detail as possible in the appropriate sheet. Then, schedule 10-15 minutes at the end of each month to update your spreadsheet. If you are new to the workforce, that may be enough to record your accomplishments, but if you are a more seasoned professional, does this mean you have to record all of your accomplishments since you started working? Not necessarily. In most cases, if you want to prove to your employer that you deserve a raise or a promotion, they will be most interested in your recent performance at work. However, you may find it helpful to try and piece together any outstanding projects or feedback you received over the past year. You may find it helpful to go through your resume to determine if any of the information there jogs your memory. You may also find it helpful to discuss past projects with your co-workers and see if anything outstanding comes up. Ask your family if they remember anything you may have mentioned to them about your excellent job performance. If you are working with a career coach, ask them for pointers on specific things you should include in your accomplishments document. Once your accomplishments document is created and has some data, you can use what you have with your superiors to leverage during your negotiations. Consider giving them a copy of your accomplishments documents or including your specifics in a presentation.
