How to Be a Cross-Functional Job Seeker

How to Be a Cross-Functional Job SeekerHow to Be a Cross-Functional Job Seeker Todays job seekers must go above and beyond to stand out to employers if they want to land a job .Having a competitive advantage in the workforce requires job seekers to understand what skills are in demand by employers and how they can become easily trained upon being hired. One thing job seekers can do to set themselves apart is to position themselves as a cross-functional job seeker. Now, youre probably wondering what this means for job seekers, especially when the most common term associated with cross-functional is teamwork. Lets find out what it means to be a cross-functional job seeker.A cross-functional job seeker has a jack-of-all-trades quality. Job seekers who are cross-functional take the time to get their feet wet in a variety of skills. This helps them diversify their skills set and make them easier to train when applying for jobs.Cross-functional job seekers are also ind ividuals who are experts in one area but have a variety of skills under their belt. For example, lets say you have a B.S. in statistics. If youre hoping to become a cross-functional statistician, you could build upon your current knowledge by gaining experience in market research or finance. Because of your math background, this would make you an appealing candidate to employers hiring market research analysts or financial analysts .As you can tell, being a cross-functional job seeker allows you to create more flexibility in your career. If youre wondering how you can become a cross-functional job seeker, here are some tips to get you startedCross-functional job seekers are very specific with their goals. Just like a cross-functional team, the different skills you gain must help you reach a common career goal , too.The goal you create for your job search will set the stage for the skills and experience you decide to gain. For example, if youre hoping to break into a new indust ry, then youll need to obtain the skills required in order to be successful. To create a directional goal, research different opportunities within your field. Take time to read job descriptions and learn about in-demand skills within your field. If you discover similar skills demanded by different job postings, consider adding those skills to your professional toolbox, too. Most career paths today are very diverse because of the number of specializations available. When marketing yourself as a cross-functional job seeker, obtain skills and experience that relate to your field, but also set you apart at the same time.A common issue job seekers have when diversifying their skills and experience is that they only familiarize themselves with different areas of expertise they dont take time to become an expert in those different skills. When gaining new skills, you should instead target your expertise and make your skills more specific. Targeting your expertise requires an investmen t in continuous learning .Take advantage of opportunities to develop your unique skills and build accomplishments you can add to your portfolio. This way, when you market yourself as a cross-functional applicant, youll increase your credibility by having something to show for on your resume and cover letter. To effectively market your different skills, you must be very careful when writing your resume and cover letter. Employers are definitely interested in candidates who have a diverse set of skills. However, they want your skills to be applicable to the position theyre hiring for.For example, lets say youre a public relations professional who has experience in content marketing, social media, and event planning. You just discovered a job opening with an events company and youre trying to figure out how to write a customized resume and cover letter. Although you have a diverse background in PR, it makes sense to market your events experience to the employer. This way, you can effec tively market your skills for the right position. The great thing about having a variety of skills is that it gives you the opportunity to be more flexible in your job search . Flexibility is an important characteristic of cross-functional job seekers because it gives you the opportunity to apply for different jobs and be easily trained once hired. When it comes to being a cross-functional job seeker, its about gaining skills to help you achieve your goals and advance your career. Even if its something as simple as learning how to use a new piece of technology employers in your field are using, this skill can set you apart from other job seekers.

How to maintain friendships when you have a busy career

How to maintain friendships when you have a busy careerHow to maintain friendships when you have a busy careerMonday morning hits and you roll out of bed, into work, and eventually head out for a long commute. By the time you get home, you wish you had the energy to meet up with a friend for dinner, but youre exhausted, so you push it until the weekend and then you never meet up. This isnt the first time.Heres how to actively invest in friendships when you have a busy career. Why you should strive to keep yur friendships aliveBut first, heres why its so worthwhile to keep up friendships - leid just for your life, but for your career in particular.Andrea Bonior, Ph.D., author of The Friendship Fix, features advice from Shasta Nelson, founder of womens friendship site GirlfriendCircles, in a HuffPost article.Nelson talks about why friendship should be a focus, even with packed schedule.Health-wise, there are few things that will make as big of an impact on our longevity and decreased s tress-levels as having a circle of friends. Making our friendships our priority isnt just a nice-to-have-if-we-have-time, but a necessity of a healthy, happy and meaningful life, Nelson tells the publication. So take time to see your friends, and/or make new ones - it just might make you feel more fulfilled.Pay up front to keep yourself from breaking plansForking over money for an activity in advance is a way to get time in with your friends when youre busy,Kate Antoniades writesin a Corporette article, based on recommendations from readers. To make yourself more likely to go out and do something with a friend, take advantage of a Groupon or Living Social deal, or other prepaid offer. Its harder to postpone a get-together or cancel plans when youve already spent the money. Now youll have no excuse not to meet a friend to take a barre class or check out a restaurant youve never tried, she writes.Scaled-back plans are better than none at allSome time spent with friends is better than n one, so get creative.Alex Cavoulacos, co-founder of The Muse, tells the publication, to make time for hobbies, passions, and relationships outside of work, Ive made sure to have a short version of what Id ideally love to do for busy weeks. Id rather have a nice long dinner with a friend if I can, but during a busy week, catching a 45-minute coffee during the day is better than not seeing friends at all.Realize that both work and friendships need attentionHBRsheds light on why this is important.Progressing at work and maintaining friendships may seem mutually exclusive, given the time and effort that both involve, but theyre not. Go ahead and set ambitious career goals, but dont sacrifice close ties in the process give each one the energy required. Career and friendships can reinforce each other, as when friends at different firms get together to share big-picture career insights, inspiring each persons passion for professional growth, it says.Your friendships dont have to suffer bec ause of your schedule.

Navy Sails Into Supply Chain with Metal 3D Printing

Navy Sails Into Supply Chain with Metal 3D Printing Navy Sails Into Supply Chain with Metal 3D Printing Navy Sails Into Supply Chain with Metal 3D PrintingIt is a beginning. The U.S. Navy builds and sails some of the worlds largest and most powerful vessels and those vessels depend on a wide range of advanced systems and machinery to operate. Now, the Navy is moving toward advanced manufacturing of some of the smallest parts of the biggest ships, approving 3D printing of a drain strainer for a steam line on the aircraft carrier USS Harry S Truman.Shipbuilders say it is the first step one that was six years in the making - toward integrating additive manufacturing into the supply chain. The technology is disruptive, it is new, and it is growing quickly, said John Ralls, an engineering manager focusing on additive manufacturing for Newport nachrichten Shipbuilding division of Huntington Ingalls Industries. This is the first approval, the first domino to fall. ASME.orgs Editors Pick Fig ht Climate Change, Build the Wall Top Story Using the Eyes of Killer Shrimp to Design a Super Camera Naval Sea Systems Commandlast year approved 3D printing of the part after a five- to six-year effort by HII to fully test and establish technical standards for fabrication. The strainer will be installed for a one-year test period. Ralls, while excited about the technology, said filling the knowledge gaps in the absence or limited development of 3D printing standards was a necessary building block in adoption of the technology. We took about five years to address the knowledge gaps, he said. There was very little information. Which are the right standards to apply? There was a strong focus on technological rigor.Navy and Marine Corps engineers are exploring new ways of integrating 3D printing into their day-to-day operations. bild Navy.milHII worked with and later partnered with printer manufacturer 3D Systems to produce the part and develop appropriate standards. 3D Systems installed its ProX DMP 320 high-performance metal additive manufacturing system at the Newport News shipyard. It is capable of printing 3D metal, marine-based alloy parts for fabrication or castings.Neal Orringer, 3D Systems vice president, says NAVSEA has lagged other services in instituting advanced manufacturing but it also presents different obstacles. We had to learn about our own unique maritime requirements, he said. Shipbuilding has a host of different standards. One of the key challenges was to demonstrate repeatability and quality control while printing a part.To do that, the developers relied on sensors developed by 3D Systems that can be placed directly into each layer of the printed object. We can track exactly how the part is being built, archive it and report every detail, Orringer said. We can conduct inspections on each layer while it is being built. While the strainer may be small, It represents the first step in the process toward broader application, Ralls said. Technical st andards are not yet in place. We laid that foundation for future work.Theres a lot of future work at Newport News. Ralls notes the shipyard has some of the most complex machinery on the planet and the list of manufacturers and suppliers is long. One of the goals is to provide leadership to suppliers and accelerate the adoption of additive manufacturing.Right now this is the tip of the iceberg in our industry, Ralls said. We want to make koranvers they have the right level of rigor in their design and product. The Navy has been using additive manufacturing for several years, but the use of 3D printed metal parts is a newer concept. The test articles passed functional and environmental testing, which included material, welding, shock, vibration, hydrostatic, and operational steam. They will continue to be evaluated while installed within a low-temperature and low-pressure saturated steam system. The prototype assembly will be removed for analysis and inspection after the test and evalu ation period. The Naval Air Systems Command already is moving toward greater implantation of 3D printed parts. In 2016, it successfully tested a 3D printed titanium engine nacelle link and attachment on a MV-22B Osprey. mora recently, it used a 3D printed flip-top valve on a T-45 Goshawk breathing mask. The command said 300 valves were printed within one month, critical to a training program. It estimates some 1,000 parts have been approved for use across the fleet by the end of 2018.Orringer notes that meeting marine standards required reworking some of the tools for parts fabrication. Our machines result in close to zero oxygen content, he said. Oxidation is a problem, and important when fighting corrosion. As the partnership between Newport News Shipbuilding and 3D Systems continues, Ralls and Orringer are looking at a variety of metals and alloys. We now use titanium for medical devices, Orringer said. But it may not be easy to cast titanium. But if we can 3D print it, maybe well s ee a greater adoption of titanium in other components of shipbuilding. The Rise of Reverse Engineering

The Rise of Reverse Engineering The Rise of Reverse Engineering The Rise of Reverse Engineering These are great times for design engineers. Over the past two decades, their job has been radically changed with the transformation of finite element analysis software from mainframe to desktop computer. With the easy availability of computer-aided design packages, reverse engineering technology has become a practical tool to create a three-dimensional virtual model of an existing physical part. That, in turn, has made the use of 3-D CAD, computer-aided manufacturing, or other computer-aided engineering applications easier. One reason design engineers are increasingly using it is that its hardware and software have become more affordable, helping engineering companies, especially the little guys, to speed up development and cut production costs. Furthermore, its software can be tightly integrated with the computer-aided design programs. They can access most features via their CAD programs, says Braxton Carter, chief technology officer at ReverseEngineering.com, a software developer in La Jolla, CA. At the same time, the costs of scanners and other hardware used to input measurements have been dropping, and the hardware is becoming smaller and easier to use, according to the hardware makers. The reverse-engineering process needs hardware and software that work together. The hardware is used to measure an object, and the software reconstructs it as a 3-D model. The physical object can be measured using 3-D scanning technologies like a coordinate measuring machine, laser scanner, structured light digitizer, or computed tomography. ReverseEngineering.com, for example, develops software that imports raw, digitized data from portable CMMs, laser trackers, and laser scanners into CAD and CAM systems. The software was released about three years ago and is now used by engineers at the U.S. Department of Defense and at industrial manufacturing companies, Carter says. When reverse engineering and CAD are integrated, the obvious benefit is that you dont need to be trained on several systems, he says. To reverse engineer a part into a CAD package, users trace the part with scanning hardware, which inputs part measurements into the system. One of his companys products is integrated with the SolidWorks CAD package, for example. Other companies that make reverse-engineering software that works with CAD and CAM systems include Geomagic Inc., of Research Triangle Park, N.C.; InnovMetric Software Inc., of Quebec, and Rapidform Inc., of Seoul. Unlike the Old One The part is now ready to be created via a CAM system. It will appear much like the originally scanned piece with appropriate improvements. Manufacturers are finding new uses for these CAD-integrated reverse-engineering software tools. One is a manufacturer that makes pumps featuring complex impellers, Carter says. There theyll have a patternmaker make the impeller, he says. And the patternmaker is pretty darn good. But at the end of the day, lets say the original pump was pumping 20,000 cubic feet per minute; now, a year later, the pump company sees its pumps are only getting 19,000 cubic feet per minute. They have to figure out what happened to that extra thousand cubic feet in performance. The pump manufacturer scans the year-old impeller into the CAD system. Once those measurements are captured, engineers can compare the measurements taken from the actual impeller against the original, as-designed part. This helps determine exactly how and where the part has degraded. With that information in hand, engineers can redesign the impeller to avoid future loss in pumping capability, Carter says. Or take Excel Foundry Machine, of Pekin, IL, which makes replacement parts for nearly every type of mining and rock-crushing machine. When the company sought to expand about three years ago, executives faced a dilemma, says Chris DeWitt, senior design engineer. We needed to venture off into more complex parts and systems, and in doing so, its rather difficult to get all the dimensions you need with the old hand tools, DeWitt says. The engineers knew the coordinate measuring machine alone wouldnt be enough. DeWitt and his colleagues knew the CMM hardware needed software that could deliver measurement data into the companys CAD system. The company installed desktop reverse engineering software from Reverseengineering.com and purchased a CMM, a Romer from Hexagon Metrology Inc., in Wixom, MI. The new CMM allows the company to create more complex replacement parts than in years past, Dewitt says. Excel Foundry engineers estimate that measuring parts and creating replacements without the hardware and software package would take about four times longer than it does now, DeWitt says. Handheld Scanner The wider accessibility of handheld laser scanners and portable CMMs like the one used at Excel Foundry means more companies can afford reverse engineering for their own unique ends, DeWitt adds. Handheld scanners can now digitize 3-D surfaces in real time and input that information into CAD systems. The tools further speed the reverse engineering process. Archeologists asked engineers at Protosys if they could lend their scanner and expertise to scan Bronze Age engraved tablets in the Chs D’égua-Piodo valley of Portugal. Scanning better captured the engravings, to help the archeologists get a clearer view of the eroded artifacts. When product design firm Protosys, of Porto, Portugal, which specializes in marine design, wanted to move into new markets, it invested in a 3-D laser scanner. What it didnt count on, however, was the attention from the archeology community, which asked Protosys if its scanner could assist with archeology projects, says Alexandre Pinto Basto, a Protosys product engineer. The companys new handheld Zscanner 700 from Z Corp., of Burlington, MA, was capable of doing that. Simply because it can scan digitized 3-D surfaces in real time, connect to a laptop computer via a FireWire cableand because many CAD packages can be run on small computersthe scanner works well in the field and can be used to scan large objects. [Adapted from Outside In, by Jean Thilmany, Associate Editor, for Mechanical Engineering, December 2009.] Reverse engineering tools are getting easier to afford and to use, and that can make for a better bottom line.

Get the Inside Scoop on How Job Interviews Work

Get the Inside Scoop on How Job Interviews Work Get the Inside Scoop on How Job Interviews Work Maybe it’s been a while since your last  job interview  ?â€" or maybe you’re about to embark on your very  first real interview after graduation. Whatever the case, it’s normal to have a moment of panic after making arrangements to meet the hiring manager. Do you even know what this meeting is  when it comes right down to it? Whats the typical format of a job interview? At its simplest, a job interview is a chance to learn more about the job while showcasing your  skills and experience. Your goal is to find out if the job is right for you, which means learning as much as possible about the duties, expectations, opportunities, team, and culture. You also want to show the hiring manager that you’re the perfect person to solve the employer’s problems and skyrocket the company to even greater heights of success. All Job Interviews Are Not Created Equal If you’ve watched any workplace sitcoms, you probably have one very specific image of what a job interview looks like. You expect a long table in a conference room, with you on one side of it, dressed in your  best business apparel, and the boss on the other side of it, dressed in his or her much fancier workwear. But job interviews don’t all look alike. For instance, your interview might: Take place in the manager’s office, a conference room, an open space at the company, a restaurant, or a  coffee shop.Involve just one person â€" a representative from Human Resources (HR), for example, or your potential new boss â€" or a panel of people. You might meet with prospective colleagues, people from other departments, the owner of the company, the Vice President of sales, just about anyone who works at the company.Last 15 minutes (generally not a terrific sign, but potentially OK, if it’s an  early screening) or several hours. You could even spend a whole day participating in several rounds of interviews. Be an exclusive affair, where you’re the only candidate interviewing, or a  group interview  involving several other candidates. Find Out How it Will Work Before You Go The many possible variations are one reason why you want to communicate clearly with the hiring manager, recruiter, or HR representative before you arrive for your meeting. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to get a sense of what you’re going into. For example, you might ask: Whom will I be meeting, and what is this person’s role? What  materials should I bring with me? (Regardless of what the hiring manager says, bring several copies of your resume and any other materials you might need to show your work, such as a portfolio.)What is the  dress code? (If there’s no dress code, tidy  business casual  is the best choice. Your interviewer might be wearing jeans, but you shouldn’t be.) What the Interview Format Might Look Like Assuming that you have answers to all your questions (and that you’re the only candidate interviewing that day, and will be meeting with just one person) the job interview format  will probably look something like this: You’ll arrive at the office, at least 15 minutes early, having confirmed the address, including the floor and suite, ahead of time and mapped out your route to avoid traffic surprises.A receptionist or administrator will announce you. You’ll be ushered into an office or conference room, whereupon you’ll meet the hiring manager or HR representative, and begin your conversation.Let the hiring manager set the tone but be on the lookout for an opportunity to ask your questions and make a case for yourself. The hiring manager might help with this, for instance by leading with an invitation to tell him or her about yourself. Come prepared with an  elevator pitch, in which you explain who you are and what you do. A  good pitch  lasts 60 seconds or less, and  â€œsells” you as a candidate to the HR person.   At the end of the interview, youll have the opportunity to  ask the interviewer questions  of your own. Be ready with a few questions about the job and the company, and anything else you need to know to make a decision if you were to be offered the job. After the interview, follow-up with a  thank-note email or note  to everyone you interviewed with. Be Prepared to Be Flexible Understand that no matter how  thoroughly you prepare, and how much information you get from the HR person on the phone, you’re probably going to have to roll with some punches the day of the interview. Maybe the representative said that you’d be meeting with one person, and you’re actually seeing three people. Maybe you’ll have to move to a different floor or another location or change your approach when it becomes clear that the hiring manager isn’t buying what you’re selling. Just remember that a job interview is, at its heart, a meeting between two or more people who might work together someday. You all have the same goal in mind: to see if you can have a happy and productive working relationship.

Solar, Hotter Than Ever

Solar, Hotter Than Ever Solar, Hotter Than Ever Solar, Hotter Than Ever However cheap and effective todays solar cells may be, they dont yet take advantage of all the light that hits them. Solar thermal energy converters are an alternative to photovoltaic cells that have the potential to reach much higher efficiencies at much lower costs. Now researchers at the University of Bristol, UK, have found a new way to efficiently milk each sunray of its energy, bringing us one step closer to that potential. The trick is to not let the suns heat get away. When a surface gets hot, it starts losing heat immediately, through conduction, convection, and radiation. Put a material in a vacuum, though, and youve stymied conduction and convection of their heat-sapping powers. If you could find a way of preventing the radiation from getting out, says Martin Cryan, a professor of applied electromagnetics and photonics at Bristol, then youve got this object that, when you put all this solar energy in, it cant conduct it away, cant convect it way, and cant radiate it away, so it will get much, much hotter. To do that, Cryan and Ph.D. student Chenglong Wan created a three-layer sandwich with carbon in the center and gold on the outside. The combination acts the way a silver blanket does, minimizing heat otherwise lost through radiation. The surface is also a metamaterial. That is, its patterned using nanolithography, by Wan, to further reduce radiation loss in ways that seem somewhat unnatural. What weve created is a surface that looks black to the sun, but to all these other wavelengths it looks like a mirror, says Cryan. Thus, the majority of the energy that hits the sandwich is trapped inside. Focused ion beam fabricated trilayer metasurface within inset showing rounded features in the upper 2D gold square periodic surface. Image: University of Bristol The technology could someday sit on the roofs of homes or other buildings. But to really start cooking it would require much higher temperatures than those typically found there, somewhere in the neighborhood of 500-600 degrees Farenheit. To get that hot, though, the gold-carbon-gold sandwich would have to sit at the focus of a big parabolic dish, sucking up the rays from a much larger area. The triple decker is part of a larger project at the university, run by Dr. Neil Fox, to develop the field of Solar Thermionics. In essence, it attempts to capture the electrons given off when things get hot, and put them to use. The central carbon layer may help in the efficient emission of the electrons. The technology needs to be in a vacuum, so it would likely end up looking like a light bulb. The whole area may rescue an industry thats about to shut down, because no one wants incandescent light bulbs anymore, says Cryan. Putting things in a vacuum and getting electricity in and out of the vacuum is a very well-established technology. Currently, Cryan and his team are trying out materials that can withstand greater heat. Gold gets soft at around 500 degrees and melts around 1,000 degrees. Cryan is hoping that nickel or nichrome can hit 1,000 degrees without much of a change. Later this year theyll bring their technology to India and test it on a huge parabolic mirror there that will take the temperature to such heights. While such a systema parabolic mirror focused on a light bulb-like objectcould some day sit on rooftops in sunny parts of the world, its not likely to replace photovoltaic cells anytime soon. But if youre in the middle of a desert in an isolated community, photovoltaics might not be the best option, says Cryan, as, ironically, when photovoltaic cells get really hot they dont work as well. But its a few years away yet. Michael Abrams is an independent writer. Learn about the latest energy solutions at the ASME Power Energy Conference. For Further Discussion What we've created is a surface that looks black to the sun, but to all these other wavelengths it looks like a mirror.Chenglong Wan, University of Bristol

Top Recruitment Trends for 2019 and How They Affect Your Job Search

Top Recruitment Trends for 2019 â€" and How They Affect Your Job Search Top Recruitment Trends for 2019 â€" and How They Affect Your Job Search As a company devoted to helping people get hired, we are in constant contact with recruiters. Human resource personnel tell us what they want to see in job applications, and we build these insights into our resume builder.Being surrounded by recruitment experts helps us understand how the job hiring process is subject to change. Like any industry, human resources and recruitment evolves based on technological advancement and shifting employer preferences. What does the future of recruitment look like? Well, we don’t exactly have a time machine or crystal ball, but we do have a pretty strong sense of what’s coming down the pipe, at least as far as 2019 is concerned. As we turn the page on 2018, and many aspiring workers make finding a new job their New Year’s resolution, it’s time for a glimpse of what job seekers will face in the year ahead. We’ve asked the experts: here are four recruitment trends you should be aware of in 2019.#1 â€" Multimedia ApplicationsThere’s a good c hance you’ve come across this one before if you’ve been on the job hunt within the last few years. But in case you haven’t, get used to the idea of employers demanding more than just a cover letter and resume as your job application. No, the cover letter and resume aren’t dying off. They are the pillars of any application and will continue to be your ticket to getting hired. However, additional assets are being recognized as valuable in helping recruiters gauge candidate fitness. For example, more and more employers want to get a sense of a person’s soft skills prior to committing to inviting them for an interview. Their solution? Asking for a short introductory video to accompany an application.Candidates are often being asked to compile a 1-2 minute video that answers broad questions like “What unique qualities will you bring to this role?” or “Why are you interested in working for Company X?”.This helps employers assess verbal communication skills and whether a pe rson is aligned with company culture.Speaking of culture, recruiters are also getting in the habit of asking for “creative” applications that include items like infographics, videos, or dedicated websites that showcase specific skills. This is especially true in fields like marketing or for jobs with technology-driven start-ups.Meanwhile, integrating your social media profiles into your application, for example by including usernames or URLs on your resume, has already become common practice, especially since recruiters are likely to search for you anyway.#2 â€" Inbound RecruitingInbound recruiting refers to the marketing efforts that companies undertake to attract top talent to their organization. In the past, the recruitment process typically involved developing a posting for a specific job, advertising that posting, then screening potential hires, and hoping that the right person applies.Yes, many companies still follow this process. But many are taking a far more proactive ap proach, and this is called inbound recruiting. The difference is that with inbound recruiting organizations develop a company brand using a set of marketing tools that will be enticing for both passive and active job seekers. These include career pages that provide a real sense of what it’s like working for the company and social media profiles that encourage people to engage online with career inquiries. This creates a system for continuously receiving inquiries from attractive candidates, not just when there is an immediate need for a specific position. What does this mean for the average job seeker? Basically, it should serve as motivation to not only look for job postings, but to start your job search by researching the companies that fit with your aspirations and background. From there, you should look to engage with the human resource department at these companies because they are expecting to get inquiries. Send a letter of interest through email or LinkedIn and look to arrange an informational interview.#3 â€" Automated Hiring ProcessAutomation is a trend taking over countless industries, all for the sake of added efficiency and precision. As the whole world goes this way, why would recruitment be any different? So, in 2019, you can expect even deeper automation in the hiring process. Considering that employers often receive hundreds of applications for posted positions, it’s easy to understand why they might have an increased reliance on screening software, such as applicant tracking systems (ATS).We’ve said it before, but applying for a job online means a high probability that your application will be filtered based on keywords identified in the job description. Recruitment software packages like ATS are only going to get even more precise. Case in point: the king of search, Google, has companies flocking to its hiring tool, Google Hire. Before you click send on your job application, remember this: keywords, keywords, keywords! It is also plausible th at artificial intelligence (AI) begins to play a role in the interviewing process in 2019. You’re probably not likely to be interviewed by robots, but employers may start video or audio recording interviews to be analyzed through AI in order to arrive at the strongest candidate for a role.#4 â€" Blockchain TechnologyIs there a bigger buzzword right now in the tech world than “blockchain”? Nope.No surprise then that blockchain is being embraced as a technological tool for re-inventing the recruitment process. Don’t believe us, check out Job.com or Aworker. The decentralized ledger associated with blockchain is seen as offering job candidates the benefit of greater security of their personal information. After all, who knows what companies do with all that data you enter in their online systems?More importantly, however, is how blockchain has the potential to cut out the middlemen of the hiring process, such as recruitment agencies. New online platforms allow job searchers to m anage their own secure profiles that cannot be searched or accessed by anyone. Power is handed over to candidates who decide for which companies or roles they wish to share their information.Of course, blockchain for recruiting is a two-way street, so even if you as a job searcher love the idea and want to sign on to one of the emerging platforms, it may take some time for employers to jump on board as well. Let’s see how far this goes in 2019.Speaking of which, imagine a world where all of your credentials and work history are recorded and verifiable. This is where blockchain may very well take us.

Railroad Police and Special Agent Job Information

Railroad Police and Special Agent Job Information Railroad Police and Special Agent Job Information The U.S Bureau of Transportation Statistics reports more than 36,000,000,000 miles are traveled by rail in any given year. Whether carrying freight or folks, trains are a hugely significant means of moving goods and people where they need to go. Of course, someone has to make sure such an important mode of transportation is safe and secure, which is why rail companies like CSX hire railroad police officers and railroad special agents. The History of Railroad Police Not long after the invention of the locomotive, trains began connecting the American coasts as the U.S. expanded westward.  Unfortunately, the railways grew and people moved west faster than the burgeoning concept of police departments could keep up. Trains were frequently the subjects of raids and robberies, and the need to protect them became readily apparent. Fortunately, the Illinois Central Railroad Company employed a bright young lawyer by the name of Abraham Lincoln  (yes, the  Abraham Lincoln),  who urged the company powers that be to form a private police force capable of protecting its resources.   An enterprising Chicago police detective saw an  opportunity, and  Alan Pinkerton established the National Detective Agency and  the first private detective firm in the U.S., which served as protection for railroad companies across the country. Rail corporations soon began to see a benefit in employing their own police forces in-house, and it was not long before individual companies created corporate police departments. Job Description Though they work for private companies such as CSX and Union Pacific, unlike private investigators, railroad police are fully sworn police officers with arrest powers.   The extent of their jurisdiction varies from state to state, but in almost all cases they can take the same law enforcement action as any other police officer in that state while in, on or around railroad property.   In fact, U.S. federal law provides that any railroad police officer or special agent sworn or commissioned in one state is considered sworn or commissioned in any other state in which the rail company owns property.  In some states, railway police have jurisdiction throughout the state.  In others, their power is limited to railroad property. The primary purpose of railroad police and special agents  is to protect freight and passengers.  Section 28101 of the United States Code outlines the function of railway police  to protect employees, passengers, or patrons of the rail carrier; property, equipment, and facilities owned, leased, operated, or maintained by the rail carrier; property moving in interstate or foreign commerce in the possession of the rail carrier; and personnel, equipment, and material moving by rail that are vital to the national defense. Railway police have many of the same units and provide  the same opportunities as state, local and federal departments. They employ detectives and investigators, patrol officers, explosive ordnance disposal and WMD units, and even K-9 officers.   They also provide specialized training to other states, local and federal law enforcement agencies. Railway officers investigate crimes related to railroad property and personnel, patrol tracks, depots and other property, and partner with other agencies to combat terrorism.   In short, railway police do for critical rail infrastructure what state, local and federal police officers do for their communities. Requirements Specific requirements to become a special agent or officer with a railroad police department may vary slightly, but generally, you must have completed a police academy and  obtain  a law enforcement certification in the state in which youll work.   Railway police also often require you to have at least three years of prior law enforcement work experience. That means youll need to become a police officer and work for a few years before you can become a railroad officer or special agent. Railroad special agents are preferred  to have at least a bachelors degree  and give preference to those candidates who have experience and training in investigations or other special law enforcement certification and skills.   To apply to become a railroad special agent or officer, visit the website of nearly any rail company and search for careers. In most cases, you can apply online. Become Financially Independent as a Stay-at-Home Mom

Become Financially Independent as a Stay-at-Home Mom Become Financially Independent as a Stay-at-Home Mom When you become a stay-at-home parent, you ultimately give up a wide variety of things, and one of the things that you may no longer have is financial independence. Many parents who choose to stay home have a spouse or partner who is financially stable and willing to make the necessary financial sacrifices for a single-income family. Sooner or later, though, there will come a time when you begin to miss and even crave that independence you lost when you became a stay-at-home parent. Address the Issue of Why You Need to Be Financially Independent When you decide that you need to be financially independent, it is important to address the issues that are causing you to feel that way. If one parent is staying at home, it will only work if everything becomes ours and you work as a team. A yours and mine attitude will not work in a relationship where one partner is dependent on the other for daily expenses and expenditures. Some stay-at-home parents find themselves in a situation where the other partner becomes controlling and closely monitors the spending, which makes it difficult to find money to buy things for themselves or others in the family without the approval of the other spouse. If this is the case, you may want to set up a category where you each get money that you can spend without being accountable to the other partner each month. If its proving difficult to come to an agreement on this matter, it also may be a signal that it is time to get some outside counseling help for the relationship. Another reason is that the stay-at-home parent or their partner may feel that they are no longer contributing to the well-being of the family. Often, stay-at-home parents can save a significant amount of money in childcare costs and other ways through using coupons  and cooking at home. Though youre not specifically earning an income, this is still ultimately contributing to the financial well-being of the family since it saves the family money overall. If this feeling exists, it is important to sit down and talk it through. Create a budget for both scenarios and determine which option is best for your family as a whole. Look for Work at Home Options If you want to become financially independent, you will need to find a way to generate income. There are many options that allow you to be at home with your children, but still bring in income to support your family. These options are not always easy and you will often need the support of your spouse or partner to make them work, but they can help you become financially independent. Start an At-Home Business One option is to start a business that you can work on from your home. This may be watching other children or it could be a service that you can provide others from your home. For example, some hairdressers will convert a garage or basement to a salon and offer services from their home around their children’s schedules.  You could also restore furniture for people or offer catering or cooking services for families that do not have time to cook. Make Money With the Internet Another option is to find a business or job that you can do online. For example, you can open an Etsy store and sell items that you make online. You could also use eBay to sell items that you find. Another option is to build a specialty website where you sell items that you purchase at a discount. There is also the possibility of blogging or vlogging and monetizing it to make money. Many of these projects can be done during your children’s downtime and work into a decent revenue stream over time. Find a Work-at-Home Job There are a number of jobs that you can do online from freelance writing to answering phone calls to data entry. The key is to look for legitimate opportunities and companies that you can trust. Some call center jobs will train you locally at a center and then allow you to work from home. Depending on your line of work, you may be able to transition your office job into one that you do primarily from home. There are online only teachers and professors as well as accountants and other jobs. You can work evenings or nights and still focus on your children during the day.

Resume Not Working Like You Thought It Would

Resume Not Working Like You Thought It Would Resume Not Working Like You Thought It Would In Part 1 of this blog series, we talked about how deafening the silence can be when basically no one is responding to your resume, even if the description of the job you applied for reads almost exactly like your career history. The problem is that your resume is not making it through the ATS. The Applicant Tracking System is becoming more and more popular, particularly with mid-sized and, especially, large employers who need technology to quickly scan the thousands of resumes they receive, and automatically rule candidates in…or out. It’s critically, critically important to make your ATS resume the right way. So let’s go over one of the major areas that could be getting you kicked out of the system before a real human being even has the chance to consider you. It’s Your Experience Why? The experience section of your ATS resume can end up being the stickiest issue. Yet, it’s for the simplest reason: you have to keep your ATS section headings super-simple, or else the ATS literally doesn’t even know what you’re saying. The wrong words to use as headings for your experience section include, “Highlights of Experience,” “Experience & Achievements,” “Achievement Highlights,” “Leadership Experience,” and “Experience & Successes.” All of these are perfect for a Word resume when you know you’re emailing it directly to a human being. Yet these are the absolute kiss of death when you’re applying online and your resume is going through the ATS. The ATS will either skip over the section entirely, or simply mark your resume as “rejected” when it gets to something it doesn’t understand. Neither outcome spells good news for you as the candidate. For Once, DON’T Differentiate Yourself I promise you, this is the ONLY time you'll ever hear me say that, as a professional resume writer. It's counter-intuitive: resumes are about standing out, both in the visual formatting and the content of your achievements. With an ATS resume, however, the visual formatting is the one thing that's got to go, pronto! When it comes to ATS, Plain Jane is the way to go every single time. All the ATS understands are extremely simple section headers: Contact Information Summary Experience Education Leave off all the extras, such as: Volunteer Experience Board Appointments Memberships Affiliations The goal is for your resume to make it through the ATS, so that you can be considered. Even though the ATS resume is the ugly version of your presentation, it’s enough for a human being to glance over it, learn what it is you bring to the table, and make the decision to call you for an interview. When you get that call, ask for the person’s email address so you can send the Word version of your resume. “ATS Express!”  is an all-new feature in my full online job search master class,  â€œ5 Game-Changing Job Search Hacks for the 50+ Job Hunter.”  Register to see a live demonstration of an ATS transformation, so you can grab your screen shots and make sure yours is correct. And  your resume may be selected  for “ATS Express!”
